On June 3rd, all the Savages gathered together on the patio of Ninfa’s on Navigation to enjoy delicious fajitas and celebrate Bethany Haley’s 10 year anniversary with Savage. Bethany is the President of Savage so it was fitting, given the most recent election, to design her card in the now infamous Shepard Fairey style.

Last night the Savages gathered at the Armadillo Palace to knock back a few cold ones and toast Kenny Ragland, Savage Vice President, Partner and Design Director, for 25 fantastic years with the company. A great time was had by all, especially Kenny, who walked away with a swanky new camera and trophy displaying his beloved coffee mug of years past. See more pictures on Facebook!

Today we found out that three of their projects were featured in HOW Magazine’s International Design Annual. The Forum of Civics brochure for the River Oaks Garden Club, The Whole Truth brochure for non-profit, Adolescents in Recovery, and Savage’s own Branding Field Guide all won awards of Merit for design.
The Forum of Civics brochure was designed to commemorate the historical significance of the building and surrounding gardens; photographs and significant events in the building’s history are documented throughout.
The Whole Truth brochure was designed by Ruth Ann Johnson with grant money won from Sappi’s Ideas That Matter initiative. It focuses on the challenges of teen addiction and the solutions Adolescents in Recovery (AIR) offers by bringing real meaning back into lives that had lost all hope. The format is a comprehensive guidebook educating the community about addiction and mental health disorders, telling personal success stories and demonstrating that recovery is possible through its program.
Branding: A Field Guide was created by Savage as a promotional brochure to communicate to clients and potential clients the importance of a strong, consistent brand. In the brochure, Savage explains the benefits of a good branding experience with rich text, a brand life cycle illustration, a humorous narrative, quotes from top branding professional and case studies.
UPDATE: Check us out on pages 52-54 of HOW’s April 2009 issue.

Last Thursday night at The Houstonian, Paula was honored with the prestigious Fellow Award at the AIGA Houston Design Legends Gala. As AIGA states: “The AIGA Fellow Award recognizes mature designers who have made a significant contribution to raising the standards of excellence in practice and conduct within the design community.” Keeping good company, Hines was also recognized as with the AIGA Houston Corporate Leadership Award.
During her speech she mentioned her concern over the word “mature” and that it actually meant “old”. When she looked it up in the dictionary, she preferred the references to “completed, perfected, or elaborated in full, careful and thorough” that identify with the creative process and how designers should think about creative development for their clients. I thought that was meaningful and true of how important the communications industry has become over the past several decades.
Aside from the fact that I (we) are extremely proud of her, Paula was certainly long overdue for this award after 35 years of leadership, mentorship and community involvement.
